We have always taught to a standard beyond the basic requirement of the riding test, so with the new criteria published come and start your training or enhance your skill set ready to take the new test.

You will be riding top quality, highly trained film and stunt horses. Amongst others, stunning, highly trained Spanish, Lusitano and Friesian Stallions.....
These lessons and training programmes are for people who are serious about persuing a career in the stunt industry and are looking to do the riding element of the Test. We also offer coaching to people already on the Register who need more experience working with film horses or want to specialise in horse riding, trick or stunt riding.
No experience is necessary, we can teach complete beginners. However, these are tough courses aimed at serious riders . The course will test you mentally and physically but ultimately, provide you with the skills required for you to ride properly, control your horse in all situations and become competent enough to pass your Stunt Test. For those already on the register, we offer lessons to improve their existing skills as a stunt performer.
The aim of these courses are to help you be at ease around horses, understand how to safely and effectively ride them in all situations and set up scenarios that may arise on set. We will help you prepare yourself for riding professionally. For the Stunt Test, elements include everything you will need to pass. From the very basic tacking up to mounted combat, vaulting, jumping, flat work, bareback, bareback jumping, riding accurately to a mark, riding one handed etc. Students who have passed the JISC/BSR exam may wish to continue to learn with us. We will cover the above in greater depth and if Students wish, we will cover falling, rearing, trick riding, advanced flat work and combat, and driving horses. We can also train you for a specific event that you need to prepare for.
Andy is a qualified Stunt Performer with over 20 years experience, working on some of the biggest films ever made. You will be in good hands but this course is not for the average rider. This is purely for those wanting to push themselves to the limit and achieve the ultimate level of riding. Beware of cheap quickie courses offering training. Unless the instructor is on the Stunt Register you are putting your life and future career in the hands of someone that has not achieved the very thing you are trying to! They will not have the in-depth knowledge of film sets or the skills required to train you!
An initial assessment lesson will be required before embarking on the stunt training programme. Please contact us for availability or to discuss your individual requirements. Lessons thereafter are priced as follows:-
Individual Assessment £60 (approx. 1.5 hours)
Individual Stunt Training Lesson £60 (1 hour)
Stunt Lesson (Senior Riders) £100 per hour
Mini Stunt Days £150 per person (10am - 1pm)
Full Stunt Days £250 per person (9am - 3.30pm)

JOUSTING LESSONS
Why not buy someone a lesson or Jousting Day for a unique present!?
We offer two kinds of jousting days for groups of 2 - 10 people. The first is a fun day aimed at non stunt riders and can be done by anyone with the ability to ride a horse in walk, trot and canter and ride one handed.
The second option is for Stunt, or those who wish to fine tune their Jousting skills, for whom we run Jousting Master Classes.
Andy performed as a professional Jouster for 15 seasons so can teach you all the things you need to become a competent Jouster, whether you want to do it for real in the shows or just have an experience that you will never forget! Details of courses will be here on our website and on the FB JISC Stunt Rider Training with AB Film Horses Page, or contact us for further details.
The format of the day will include: horses in full comparisons (costumes) and riders in costume for photos and a "competition" Joust at the end of the day. Peasants Heads, Quintain, Targets, some Mounted and Ground Skill at Arms are just a few of the aspects covered. A great fun day for stunt and non- stunt alike.
Jousting Day Experience (non stunt) £150 per person (10.00 - 2.00pm)
Jousting experience days can be done by non JISC - this fun day is suitable for anyone who can ride to a reasonable standard.

BSR Feedback from some of our Trainees:
As a Martial Arts Master I know an expert when I meet one. Andy Butcher is a truly skilled horseman and horsemaster.
If you were an athlete and offered to be trained by Usain Bolt you’d jump at the chance. With a lifetime of horses and 25+ years in the stunt industry, Andy is your film industry Usain Bolt. Andy is actually interested in your progress. If you start with a modicum of modesty and provide your own commitment, effort and perseverance the skills come.
I travel two hours each way to get to train with Andy, and know that I’m the lucky one.
Cheers Andy.

I began training to join the JISC Stunt Register in January 2016, being extremely keen in training up as a Stunt Rider for the Film/TV industry but also not knowing of any stables that would help me achieve this aim, a friend and fellow stunt trainee recommended that Andy Butcher of AB Film Horses would be the best place for me to learn.
Prior to March 2016 I had never ridden a horse before in my life, it was clear that after my first lesson I was in the right place and under Andy’s tutorage my skills have excelled rapidly due to a ‘no-nonense’ approach to horse riding and stunt work. Whilst training at AB Film Horses, I have had the pleasure of adding further skill to my horse riding arsenal such as mounted combat, riding in teams with flags/banners, trick riding, vaulting, falling, jousting and much more.
Due to the high level training and knowledge passed on by Andy, I have recommended his stables to other stunt trainees and actors as an ideal place to train for the register. I look forward to future lessons to enhance my skills as a stunt rider even further.

Riding, and “riding for the film industry”, are very different. If you want to be regarded as a competent film horse rider you need proper training. Andy Butcher has 25+ years experience in the industry and is the only person I have met who can give the training you need.
